Research Interests:
The goals of the research conducted in our laboratory are to discover prognostic markers and to听characterize their biological roles in the oncogenic processes leading to the development of听prostate cancer.听Our laboratory uses a combination of biological approaches including genomic,听computational/bioinformatic, evolutionary, molecular, cellular and developmental methods for an听integrated approach to prostate cancer research, concentrated on identifying the underlying cause听of observed disparities in prostate cancer incidence rates between men with different genetic听ancestries now living in the United States.听It is our goal to eliminate prostate cancer incidence and听mortality rate disparities in African American Men by population stratification using risk prediction听alleles identified by mapping by admixture linkage disequilibrium.听 These alleles may identify听causal mechanisms of cancer initiation and progression that can be leveraged to develop effective听strategies for prevention and management of prostate cancer in all men.

Research Interests:

  • Our lab aims to understand the molecular mechanisms by which cancer cells progress into听advanced and malignant phenotypes. In particular, we focus on the role of the aryl hydrocarbon听receptor (AhR) in prostate cancer progression.听AhR听is widely known for its role in mediating the听harmful effects of a number of environmental toxins. However, evidence suggests that it may听also play a key role in the progression of prostate cancer from androgen sensitive to castration听resistant. Specific goals of our lab are to:听鈥
    • Determine the role of听AhR听in the development of castration resistant prostate cancer via听interaction with the androgen signaling pathway.听听鈥
    • Investigate the effects of environmental toxins (AhR听agonist) on prostate cancer progression听and the ability of naturally occurring ligands to inhibit progression.听听听听鈥
    • Establish听AhR听as a potential therapeutic target in the treatment of castration听independent听听 prostate cancer.听
